My Training Plan

To train for my first marathon, I'm using the 18 week / 55 mile plan from Pete Pfitzinger's Advanced Marathoning. I'm currently 11 weeks out from the marathon, which means I'm moving from the Endurance cycle to the Lactate Threshold cycle. That means that for the next 4 weeks, I'll be doing a lot of tempo runs, and even my recovery runs will have little bursts of speedwork thrown in. This plan has me feeling stronger than I ever have in any of my previous training cycles.

Today's run was a 10 mile tempo with 5 miles at my half-marathon race pace of 7:30/mile. I took a 3-mile warmup with some of my friends from the downtown running group and when they turned around to head back, I picked up the pace to what felt right. I've been trying to hit my pace on tempos without looking at my watch in order to learn how to pace myself without it. I hit the first mile in 7:29, pretty much dead on. The final 4 tempo miles were 7:29, 7:26, 7:28, and 7:24. I ran the final two miles as a nice cooldown. All in all, it was a great run.

A little bit about me

Hi. My name is Andy. A little over two years ago, I weighed 330 pounds. Today, I've lost 140 pounds and I'm training for my first marathon, the Tobacco Road Marathon in Cary, NC, with a goal of finishing in under 3:30. I'll be using this blog to chronicle my training and also to give occasional tips on weight loss and running in general. Here's a quick video of my journey up to this point.
